Feedback about WB 2.7 RC2
« on: March 13, 2008, 09:13:04 PM »
Hello,

the testing phase of the first WB 2.7 release candidate is over. As some of you have found some bugs in the first release candidate, we decided to isssue a second WB 2.7 release candidate.

Changes introduced since RC1:
Legend: # Bugfix, + new feature, ! Update
# fixed bug in multiple groups (group rights did not add up properly)
# fixed save-bug of WYSIWYG pages (only if page language and backend language are different)
# fixed bug in view URL link (slash too much)
# fixed bug with news module end-date
# fixed bug in output-filter module (.@ in >xxxx</a> mailto part were replaced too, restricted to mails now)
# fixed bug when creating pages in conjunction with AddDefaultCharset
! FCKEditor now supports WB user home directories
! removed all hard coded /admin pathes by dynamic ones
! re-worked the backend layout (optimized icons with respect to loading time and Internet Explorer)
+ added some more language files

You can find the download link for the WB 2.7 RC2 on the WebsiteBaker start site.

IMPORTANT:
Please do not use the RC2 version in a productive environment. This version is for testing on a test environment like XAMPP only. If you are already using WB 2.7 RC1, you can update to RC2 by copying all files contained in the WB 2.7 RC2 package (except config.php) over the existing RC1 installation.

This thread is only for feedback with respect to RC2 and to report bugs. We will not add any new features, so please no feature requests in this thread.

Please consider to read the posts in the RC1 thread before posting in this thread.

NOTE:
As we expect posts for many different areas regarding the WB 2.7 release candidate, we will comment in your thread, whenever we think it make sense. We will not modify your original text, but may add comments in brown font color. The author will be named in brackets e.g. (doc).

We will delete all posts not related to RC2 to keep this thread readable. If you want to discuss a topic in more detail (e.g. layout), please start a seperate thread.

Have fun with testing WB 2.7 RC2
Regards Christian

Hi there!

I reported about my experiences with WebsiteBaker before, and again, I can only say I am amazed. Having converted my whole website with more than 550 pages to WB I was just waiting for v2.7 to be released to publish it in the most up to date version.

So today I did a test-upgrade of WB 2.6.7 to 2.7 RC2 on XAMPP with my complete website and having tested only 10 minutes I can't say I'm only partly thrilled. Since a lot of issues I had were due to my configuration, I rewrote this entry and I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My main issue is with the new search-function.
- The new search does not include the News-entries. It doesn't even show the page on which a news-entry with the corresponding search-word would be.
- Leaving the 15-item-search-output might cut off a lot of search-results without telling you how many more results there would be! If you take out the 15-entry-limit the search-results-page takes ages to load.
- When the results are display everything past the content-field in my template gets cut off. Meaning the footer section of the template is missing completely!

So something went wrong with the update. The new search function should show and link to the specified entriy and also should show a text excerpt. Please be shure that all files from modules news are overwritten with the new ones. (ruebenwurzel)

I found out why FCKEditor won't work with very large sites (as reported in another thread). This is due to a 60s-timeout! However I only got the error-message (maybe in include.php?!) once, since then I just don't get to see the FCKEditor with such a large site.
I don't know whether this is WebsiteBaker specific or due to my server - any clarification hereon would be appreciated.

The new search-function really let me consider whether I should stick with 2.6.7. I like the new admin-backend though - any way of keeping the old search?

Best regards,
VSG

PS: Another curious thing about the new search. I compared the results with the old one on my "real" but unpublished website. So I searched for the same expression and got 17 results with the old search - and 4 with the new one. So I did the search again with the new one and got 9 results. Still using the same expression. Shouldn't this be always the same? And the same as with the old one?

No, the update went flawlessly. I removed the "[EXCERPT]" from the search entry, because I don't like that - and just to show you what I mean:

First the old search then the new search.
And both pictures taken with the same website-content. I don't get it, this doesn't add up. And as I said, the update was completed without any problems.

As you can see the disclaimer in the end is missing - it is in the footer-section of my template. And that is what's cut off.
Plus: it doesn't show half the results found like the old search above.

VSG

did you use the standard news and the standard search in your old page, or did you use any changed version? The results page looks different then the default one. Also did you tried it before you removed the excerpt or something else. For me it looks like you don't use the default ones. (ruebenwurzel)

I use the default news and default search - I simply deleted the author and timestamp output that is editable in the admin-panel. No module was installed on my board (except PageCloner and TemplateEdit - but those two were updated to the latest before upgrading WB).

However, this doesn't change the fact that not the same results are found.
Can anyone confirm / crosscheck this with a test installation of 2.7 and a "live" 2.6.7?

This is so sad ... I'm truly sorry for having caused anyone trouble today. The fault is all my own. Well almost.

My normal PC isn't the fastest, being a P4 1.9 GHz with 1GB RAM. Well, it's fast enough for me at least. Having tried the XAMPP-installation on a Pentium Mobile 1.8 with 1GB RAM the processor finally seems fast enough to actually complete the search function. It appears to have been a time-out problem.

I understand the search is very hardware-hungry with such a big website as mine (more than 550 pages) - but I wonder: will it be fast enough when I upload it to the server in the end?
Or can I push the time-out in the Apache configuration? And when: where can I do it?

On another note (even more depressing), I have repeatedly reported the FCKEditor not working with pages more than 100.000 characters. This also works on the Pentium Mobile - though the page takes long to load, it actually does. Again this appears to be a timeout problem - I assume with Java. Has anyone any ideas how to push the time-out limit here? So the very few people with PCs as old as mine can still work this?

Best regards - and sorry again, the new search works after all. Just my PC is too slow to do it.

WB rocks as usual :)

I've created complete Russian translation of default modules language files (UTF-8), I hope it will help to make WB more international and it would be nice to include them in 2.7. The file is attached. I've tested it using RC2 and it looks fine.

Complete Russian translation of the main language file will be available in several days.

Thanks for your contribution. But can you convert the als files to pure ANSI (not UTF8 without BOM) and also convert all signs to Unicode? Thanks (ruebenwurzel)

Thanks.

Good morning,

after the embarrassing discovery yesterday evening, I did another check here - again regarding the new the search. On my local XAMPP I installed both the "old" WB 2.6.7 and the new WB 2.7 RC 2 - same website content.

My website now has 568 Pages and the database clocks in at 13.6 MBs.

Performing a search-operation on both installations brought a new perspective to my problem.
It took the old search 0.601 seconds to complete.
It took the new search 52.677 seconds to complete! :?

Is there any way to optimize this? I don't know whether the new search function has been tested with such large sites, but since the old one managed it, I assumed the new one would as well.

Is there no way of making the new search optional?
Or using the old one via a module?

Because the way it is now, the time difference will be the same both here and on the webserver. Since I plan to further add content to the site, the problem will only get bigger.

Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
VSG

Hi,
I found a little bug in News-Module: When no End-Date is set (If you don´t want to have an end-date), it copies the start-date automatically in the End-Field. That´s stupid, cause the news will not be published.
If no Date is set, the news must be published I mean.
As far as i know, this one was fixed in 744, included in RC2 (thorn)

Woud be nice if you could test this.

Unfortunately I'm not home today, will be (hopefully) in about 25 hours. I'll test it then and post here immediately.

Thanks for the fast reply.

did some modifications here and here.

Finally got to test the modifications ... here's the line-up, performed multiple searches:

Search with 2.6.7:
0.4 - 0.7 seconds

Search with 2.7 RC 2 (unaltered):
50 - 54 seconds

Search with 2.7 RC 2 (Thorn's modifications):
44 - 48 seconds

Search with 2.7 RC 2 (removed/renamed "search.php" in wysiwyg & news modules):
1.0 - 1.5 seconds

Hope this helps. Thanks in advance!
I won't be able to test as much over the holidays, but I'll try.

hm, not as expected  :-(  With those large data the excerpt-extraction appears to be the bottleneck.

BTW: if you don't need the excerpts (but want to have the direct links for news e.g.), you can set Max lines of excerpt in the Settings to 0 [In german this is called somewhat misleading "Max Anzahl Treffer"]. The excerpt-extraction is bypassed this way.
If you don't need the direct links neither, just remove all search.php from the modules-directories.

Meanwhile i will do some more work on this. Would be nice if you could do a final test next week.
Will send you a pm.

Doing so I can reduce the search-time to 30 - 35 seconds.

[In german this is called somewhat misleading "Max Anzahl Treffer"].
Found it - why don't we change that line for the final version? For example to "Max Zeilenanzahl der Text-Auszüge"? Would be far clearer that way :-).

Since I only need the links to the news-entries, I removed it in the wysiwyg-module. Reduced search-time to 1.5 - 2.0 seconds that way.

I'll be there and test it out.
Since I installed 2.7 RC 2 on a local test-installation, I don't have any disadvantages. My "live" 2.6.7 is currently just for internal testing. I would like to go public using 2.7 though - since it has a lot of improvements that really come in handy.

I'll wait. :-)
Thanks for your time! And have a nice holiday-weekend!

Hello. :)

I just followed the procedure to upgrade my own site from 2.6.7 to 2.7 rc2 and appearantly everything went ok. After a few minutes, unfortunately, I found a problem while editing the site from the admin sections. When I click on "pages", for a few seconds I can see the tree of the pages, soon after it disappears and on the admin page remains a sad notice:

Modify/Delete page:
none found

BTW, the list of pages stops creating in a tree with more then 100 pages (under seven subtrees).

The site, from the frontend, contains everything, and in the backend I can see modules, templates and media files correctly, but I cannot edit pages.

Help please. :)
Beppi.

PS: Yes, I have a backup, don't worry :)

Update:
Everything works with IE. Not with Firefox, even after a restart and the usual cache cleaning.

I had the exact same problem at first - you need to delete your cache and your cookies, log in again and then everything will be ok in Firefox as well.
At least this worked here on my machine.

Pls. find attached a Danish language file (da.php) which is updated to support WB 2.7 RC2 and contains numerous improvements over previous official Danish language files. Pls. include it in the next WB release.

Thanks for your work. Added the changes to SVN. http://projects.WebsiteBaker.org/websitebaker2/changeset/766 (Ruebenwurzel)

Thanks very much and sorry for bothering. It's working now. In the same time arose another problem.
While searching in the site, if the search returns no results, the answer is correct. But if some results should be displayed, this is what I get:

CGI Error
The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers.

Anyone got the same? Thanks very much.

I'll check this, but I don't have any access to the host platform (yes, unfortunately it's Windows). Anyway, the error is not random, but appears each and every time now and didn't appear with 2.6.7 .
If this can be of any help, I can give you full access to the site that creates the error: tell me where to write them.

Thanks for the support and for the fantastic work!

Sorry, I only have one site, that is http://www.beppi.it/public/OthelloMuseum, hosted on aruba.it, and I confirm that it was working with 2.6.7 version.
Try a search there.
For example:
http://www.beppi.it/public/OthelloMuseum/search/index.php?search_path=&string=reversi&match=all

As told before, anyway I can give authorization for website baker developers to check if they need to, or whatever they need.

Also, if you want we can run a test by seeing what happens by hosting my site on your platform. I can copy my pages and db to your site.

Update:
the problem seems to present itself almost always  (say 99%): some very rare times it happens that the search, only if with 1 single result returned, is printed. As usua, it works 100% when there's no result to give.

Hi Beppi and Thorn,

I think this problem is related to you webhost Beppi. As i just created a fresh clean install of WB2.7RC2. I just made 2 pages with both content as "bramus" in it. Then i searched for "bramus" and i did get 2 results. So no error.

Thats why i think it is related to your webhost. I think they have some configuration different then me. Maybe they are running PHP as a CGI extension. I'm running them as an ISAPI extension and that's just working perfect.

Maybe you should try to contact your ISP and ask them about this, as i dont think this is a WB related problem. And i was also wondering why running it on Windows webhost while it better runs on Linux. Most of the time Windows is also more expensive then Linux.
Good luck with solving your problem. If you need more information from me, just message me or leave a message here.

Don't tell me!! Why I had the bad idea of choosing Windows, now I should pay to transfer all to linux, so I try to keep life on Windows. :-(

I will submit the question to the webhost service, but the question is: why 2.6.7 was working perfectly? There must be something that triggers the problems now, that was not there before, and that, I suppose, could arise for other users as well: what exactly has been done on the search function?
thank you.

Beppi,

Thorn can answer that question, but as far as i know this is a webhost related problem. As i also have 2.6.7 running good on my Windows server, and a clean install of 2.7 RC2 also works fine, so i think it will be a problem at the webhost.

Added a fixed language file, some small bugs fixed, not overwatched everything but some parts. Some small fixes for correct Dutch ;)

Added a fixed language file, some small bugs fixed, not overwatched everything but some parts. Some small fixes for correct Dutch ;)

And I fixed that one again since it wasn't all correct yet :) Also, I noticed that the used language was a mix of formal and informal phrases. Fixed that too. It's all formal. Professional software should address it's users professionally.
