I've done an all css template design from scratch for re-doing the site for my paintball team..

I've done a lot of mixing up of elements.. from dual backgrounds on the upper banner, to a creative use of show_menu2 to create "bread crumbs" on some pages (here for example: http://staging.mnmilitia.com/pages/from-the-trenches/field-reports/attack-the-fort.php )

Also, instead of the usual login box, I coded in links to the login and sign_up pages to bring you to the specific pages.. sign in using "player" for both username and pw if you want to view how it looks when signed in.

Good site and personally I like selfmade templates ... but you need to optimise the gif of the camo net you use as background, looks better if it tiles propperly ...

Yea, I've been wondering on how to best modify that graphic... maybe expend it soften it a bit.

With such a pattern, I don't know that I'll ever get the opposite edges to meet up properly.

ok... slick... how'd you do that? I have GIMP Portable and just starting to learn it.

I used to use PSP6, got a discount copy of 9 or 10 and they went and changed all the menus and stuff on me. I figure if I have to relearn how to do things I might as well start working with GIMP as I've heard so much good stuff about it.

In GiMP 2.2 this function can be found in "Filters -> Map -> Make Seamless" and does it automatically.

Personaly I don't see any reason for me to use photoshop or closed source software in any case. If I look for software that I need, it's source forge. Also consulting on using open source in business environments is part of my business.

Lots of snippets used, from Random Image (a number of times) to the news anywhere, and am pulling events off my SMF calendar. You won't see it, but if you are an editor, the pages you are allowed to edit have an "edit this page" icon in the upper right of the content box.

Bout the only things I may still add is the option to change backgrounds like in the forums... and eventually I want to add a snippet that pulls the last couple of postings in the forums and displays them on the front page, but I need to make sure it's only pulling from public, not private forum sections.

All I can see on the mainsite is a whole lot of sponsored google link pages ... disappointed. if I wanted google results for something I would go to google ...

I hate busy backgrounds, your menu elements aren't very distinct from each other, i dont like water-marks on pages, your random images module sometimes gives you the same images, looks like you have parts of your footer in the $footer() and in the template. [about]

I'm a picky bastard so you dont have to listen to anything i say!

Other than that it is a very NICE site.  I wish you all the luck.

whoops... that's what I get for doing this while at work.

The copyright notice is supposed to be outside the main block... and I haven't decided what to do with the actual footer yet, other than the links to our team sponsors.

I've been trying to figure out a way to put a separator between the menu items, like a - or ~ something, but haven't quite figured the best way to do so without also having one after the last item.

Scratch that, I sorta have, on some of the third level pages using the cookie crumb feature in showmenu2, but I haven't had a chance to try and implement that on an entire level of a menu.

the images, yes... sometimes repeat... I'm just using the stock randomimage snippet. They're all pulled from a single folder. I have gone back and forth between that, and setting up five different folders and splitting up the images between them... and maybe just writing a new snippet that say pulls one image, and the next X images after it. So I might call it with RandomImage(5) and if it grabbed image 4, it would also display the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th in the array. (starting over at 0 if it hits the end of the array).

Just haven't spent that much time on it yet. But... the way it is makes it sort of like playing a slot machine, sometimes you get 3 or 4 of a kind! heh.

If it was more of a corporate site, I wouldn't do a watermark, and tone down the background... but for the target audience, I think it works well.

Sweet... I like that.  (Your entire site is pro, in my opinion - perfect, as you said, for the target audience!  Heh... bad pun...)  Anyway, I was hoping to do the same thing  - I replaced the standard login box on all of my sites, but it would be great to have an "Edit this page" link along with Preferences/Administration/etc., just like you have. 

My question is, what code (in your template) did you use to get the link to go to the current page?  You probably have something like, http://www.example.com/admin/pages/modify.php?page_id= , but what goes after that?  Is there a [TEMPLATE_TAG] or PHP variable to grab the current page id?

I've been meaning to look this up for a while, but if you could enlighten me I'd really appreciate it!

Whoa - I am really impressed with your Baker addons.  I tried downloading your Edit Page snippet, but instead of downloading it it looks like it ran the php file instead.  The ZIP'ed files all work fine, but I couldn't seem to download the two snippets.  (Maybe it's just me.)  If you're bored if you want to take a look at that (maybe just put the php files inside zips?), but I'm sure you have better things to do.  I sure appreciate your help, though.  You are definitely a master chef.

Sweetness!  I just remembered your function today (like, what, 2 months later?!) and added it to one of my sites.  It is so useful, and I'm sure everyone else editing the site is going to love it.  (I just definitely won't tell them that I've known about it for 2 months but forgot to add it!)

Thanks again for sharing this, and for taking the time to get it packaged.  It's pro too, like handling who can edit which page and everything.  It looks secure and really nicely done!

I hope one day I'll be good enough to contribute some useful functions like this one.  Thanks for helping out us newbies, and keep up the great work.  You rock!
