How to insert icons or pictures in the menu sidebar?

hi, I'm been wondering how to insert some icons, pictures,... in the sidebar through the backend panel.
It seems it's only possible to enter texts or links as menu entries but no pictures unless you do it in the css sheet, right?

I saw such a template some days ago. Have a look at Chios page http://WebsiteBaker.at/wb-templates/ and search for "buttons". You can download it and learn from Chio.
