ARRRRRRGGGGGGGGG!! Time-out! NOOOOOO!!!
« on: May 23, 2007, 12:16:53 AM »
I just finished writing a long, brilliant, insightful, powerful  :|... anyway, a LONG news piece, off and on over the last while.   I hit save, and see.... the "log in" screen.

What? It's GONE??  It's ALL GONE??!?!?!!!    :-o :-o :-o :x :x

How can we change the time-out options?  Can we save to a temporary file every so often? SOMETHING so we don't lose work in progress?

I'm SO annoyed.  I'm sure I'm not the only one that this has happened to. GMAIL automatically saves every so often to a draft folder. This shouldn't happen.

The script timeouts are set in the server configuration. Nothing you can do from the script itself.

Maybe put a feature request in the bugtracker for your issue (automatic save after 5 min, or even available to set in the options).

But I think the issue you are having has nothing to do with script timeouts but cookie lifetime (which is set on the server as well) since you are prompted to log in again.

cheers

This issue also seems to vary, depending on which browser you use. I had a client having the same problem with a forum they were running - some people were taking too long to type in their posts, and were getting automatically 'logged out', and losing their writing. What we found was, that in some browsers (like Apple's Safari), you just need to 'go back'/'return', and the browser will remember the full contents of what you were typing.

Some browsers, however (like FireFox) DO forget what you had entered.

Although icouto is correct in saying some browsers (such as Safari) remember the contents of your posted form when you use back/forward, I don't think session lifetime will vary.
This option can be set in the PHP.ini file, a we should hopefully be able to use ini_set or similar to make it configurable from WB. Please support as a ticket
Also, next time, please try to use a more pleasant title (although I do understand how this problem can be annoying ).

BTW, the TinyMC Editor has/offers an autosave plugin. But I think it has not been implemented into the WB Version ... or am I wrong there?

cheers

My assumption was the server config too.  FF doesn't remember, eh? IE certainly doesn't. Actually, I think that's ON PURPOSE, as a security issue.

Autosave would be great - as long as it's autosave to a temporary file.  All the more reason for having staging pages built in.  Enough to drive one to do that... I do wish I had the time.  :-(  I'll try and add it to Requests.

Er, ya. Sorry about the title.  It was a HUGE document, even for me & my rambling postings, all kinds of citations, etc.

Sigh.
