Title: Feature suggestion: Search-Highlights Toggle-bar
Post by: VSG on April 03, 2008, 09:01:02 AM
Hi, there!

I know there's a feature-freeze for WB 2.7 (and I'm really anticipating the release ... please make it in April *keepsfingerscrossed*), however, maybe that's an idea for 2.8 or 3.0. Or this can't be done at all?!

I like the search-function and the fact that once you click on a result the page opens with your search-expressions highlighted. But would it be possible to place a bar on the very top of the page that says something like

"You are now browsing the page with you search-expressions highlighted. To turn off the highlights please 'click here'."

Any once you "click here" the page is refreshed without the highlights. So you don't have to fumble in the page-address if you want to normally browse the specific page without the highlights. Sometimes the highlights are very useful, but sometimes they are not.
The bar could be similar to the pop-up-prevention bar of Firefox or Internet Explorer in design and size.

If you edit a post here in the form the page isn't completely reloaded but simply refreshed without loading the images and all the content again. Maybe some technique like that could be used for the page-refresh to increase refresh-speed?!

As I said, I don't know whether that's possible or not, but I think it would be a nice, handy feature ... that is not supported in any CMS I know. But I don't know whether it's feasible at all.

Any input highly appreciated. :-)
Thanks!
Have a nice day, best regards,
VSG

Hello!

I think it is technically no problem (via javascript) to have such a toolbar, like some plugins for forum software have ("You are not registered. Click here"). However I think most people are confused having a "toolbar popup" and it just overwhelms the page. I think as a feature in WB core this is too much and makes an overwhelmed CMS out of an easy one... But if you think it could be useful just write a module for it, should be possible.

Hi!

Well, I would write it ... if I could. Never having learned PHP or HTML I gathered my "skills" being a webmaster for about eight years now and creating a few websites that got bigger and bigger. And sometimes I am even able to locate a problem and fix it.
But something like that would simply be way beyond my abilities.

Pity. Maybe someone else will adapt this.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to 2.7.

Have a nice day!

Hello,

i don't know enough about JS to determine if this is just stupid:
But maybe the Javascript/DOM (JS v1.5/DOM v1.0) Method removeAttribute() may help - just removing the background-style from the class "highlight" ?

Did find only this (german) doc: http://de.selfhtml.org/javascript/objekte/node.htm#remove_attribute
