Title: //Edit - Admin template 'Studio' for development/use
Post by: D72 on October 26, 2010, 05:28:33 PM
Hi all,

Since i am working permanently with WebsiteBaker i was catching up some work i was doing a while ago.
I don't like the default admin templates so i started working on a new template for about a year ago.
But i never had the time to finish it... (sounds familiar?)
It's still not finished actually, but i think it's done for 90%
For me it's finished 95% as i also tweaked some WB core files. Because not all .htt files has effect on some parts in the WB engine. I will change and develop some parts from time to time. But for now it fits my needs and it has a look i can present as a 'Pro' backend to my clients.
The 'studio' template has some mayor tweaks and really differs from other templates. So be warned.

If there are people here, especially people of the core development team who is interested to have this template to develop it more, that would be a great honor.
In my opinion it's a trendy template and one that fits 2010.
Though, it could be more improved. text inputs which should have better widths, elements that should translated by the laguange files. Cos some parts, like the header.htt is not totally translated by the language files and i had to change it manual. I just have not the php skills on how to add language lines so it works in the backend.
I really tried, but failed many times. Thats why the manual translating on some parts.

This template is actually ment for the core development team. If they see possibilities with it to make it a decent admin template that people can use or maybe even as a default wb template.
Be honest, besides the argos_theme, the other themes are representing the 90's for real (if you ask me...)

Well, have a peek (http://tinyurl.com/WebsiteBaker). I got it installed on a test version on my server.
Tell me what you think. Lets make this the best admin template.

Remember, some marges, positions etc. are not very well done because personal, i had to change some other core files of wb too. My own version has for example more links in the topmenu, like Logout, Dashboard etc.
But i think when someone spend some time with this template, it could be a nice one to use.

Username: demo
Password: demo
Sneak a peek (http://tinyurl.com/WebsiteBaker)

// Edit
I got many PM's, emails and requests when this theme is available.
My intension was to make it available to the core team if they found it a good idea to uses it as a "default" theme or whatever. But there are many people who would like to use it right now.
So, i collected everything, deleted lots of unnessecary files and improved little things like loading times, some javascripts merging, css, etc

Remember! this theme here is and probably stays in 'Beta' version, untill the core team adds it to the WB repository. If you experience some issues with widths, margins, paddings when you installed some modules, there is a big change you have to change some individual modules too.

But, the theme is fully installable from the backend and works great for 95%. Keep in mind, when you want to use the theme in your own language, you must translate some .htt files manual.
Also, the icons in the collapsible panel on top of the theme, is not responding on user rights. Which means, everybody that is logged into the admin can see the icons. People with no admin rights can see the icons, but the content and functions are not shown. Only Admins have full control over the icon panel.

Cheers and have fun. Finally a first step to a modern theme for WB... :)

[UPDATE: zip file removed by admin because of possible copyright conflict. See last post.]

Hi Dave,

It looks fine and i will be going to contact you by email in the next time, because we have many changes in the core and templates. I in my point of view, the community too want this fine backend theme.

Looks nice indeed.

The only (only) thing I dislike is the dimension and position of the logo.
But the rest is very nice.

I suggest you to work with the dev team to make it to the 2.9.dev package.
They changed a lot.

I would love to see it as the default theme for a new generation WB.

Kind regards,
Stefek

Hi Dietmar,
I'm glad you agree with the fact that the community also need something like this.
It's just a skin... but if there are a lot of people out there with the same issues as i have, a nice looking skin do can increase the happiness of working with WB.
Just contact (info@studio25.nl) me if you want the source files and the theme package.

Hi Stefek,

I agree on you about the logo.
I had created this template first, so at the end i had to place the logo... somewhere :)
But there are many more things i still dislike or could be improved.
I have a slight feeling that this theme can be a nice admin theme for WB.
The main reason why i started this, is the fact that i missed direct links to the module section, or an admintools section when i was modifying a page for example. I allways had to go to 'Extra' > 'Modules'
It's just one click extra. But i just miss it. That's the reason why i made the ToggleBox with the shortcut icons.

But there are many more snippets which could make it better and nicer.
For example, all error messages, all success messages... they all can be called by inline jquery notifications instead of a redirect to a error/succes page, which will redirect you back.

The original plain HTML templates i have also has collapsable headings, collapsable panels, sortable tables, style switcher for different color settings etc
But i just had no idea how to integrate them in WB.

Would be nice if WB has a theme like this. I'm sure people will be excited more to use WB.
It's all about how WB uses and controls the frontend. But when the backend looks stunnings too...
Well, i'm sure WB can use something like this to get more users.

I have no freak'n idea how the template system in 2.9 works right now.
But i love to give a helping hand to port this theme as much as i can.

Yes, you're absolutley right.

As I spent endless hours on creating a backend theme on my own, I know that there are a lot of things which could be arranged better in the backend. I have some sugestions to make, but, in short: you made a very good job on this.

The way 2.9 is arranged is very similar as it was until now (as far as I know).
The are changes of some {PLACEHOLDERS} and template parts, so one thing needs to be done: all the *.htt files must be rearranged again.
But I can't tell too much because I didn't have seen the new files.

All I can say, you're on the way to make it.
And I hope the devs will take the opportunity to make it happen.

Kind Regards,
Stefek

I know what you mean. I think i've had at least 10 versions made for BW's backend. Just to fit what i want or would like to see. WB for me is based on simplicity. Even a little child could handle WB i think.
And this simplicity should allways be there in WB. But it could be more simple and more better and more faster.
I'm really sure about it.
I'll just wait on what the Devs think about this. Meanwhile, i think about releasing another theme one of these days.
I have a different theme somewhere and i think it can be used as an approved theme as well.
Have to look for it and will install it on the demo site as well.

This motivates me more as i thought. Nice that you guys likes it

Very nice template and the true words you write.

I wish you much fun with the DevTeam to convince them, hopefully there is not the bureaucracy in the way. Javascript is devil's work in the backend and the user loves rudimentary surface once a developer told me.    :-D :-D :-D :-D

Yes, me too.
The only reason I never published a theme is, that the themes (inner *.htt files) changes from version to version.
This is annoying.
I don't know it the devs follow my suggestion to make use of partially a kind of a 'core-theme' with the possibility to overwrite those files on demand. There is a german thread on this topic.
I heard one day they will split it that way, but it won't be the 2.9.

But this isn't a hold up to keep on doing this.
One day it will be done and this will save a lot of time for both - developers and designers.

And of course, as you said, there are still some things to do to make the backend even more accessible (easy) for end user experience.
Often the backend sensation itself is a vital argument to stay whith a cms or keep searching for another one.

WB should be that way that anyone's willing to stay ;-)

Kind regards,
Stefek

It does look very good, though it does still have some smaller issues:

1) Body Height - On a screen with a  larger resolution you will experience a "content" jog to the left when a page with more content than screen space is called and the slider on the right is invoked by the browser (FF).

2) In the page overview the white background does not completly fill the conten area. In my case everything between the "Add Page" header under the page tree and the footer image is not filled (FF & IE).

I verified these issues with FireFox 3.6.13 (Windows) and IE 8.0.6 (Windows) from a Windows XP Machine. I haven't yet checked from my usual Linux machine or with other brownsers.

[EDIT]Just had a quick go with Opera 11beta (Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) Presto/2.7.39 Version/11.00), same issues like FF[/EDIT]

cheers

Klaus

Klaus

thanks for putting your eye on it.
Hope it´s not to much to ask, but could you make some screenshots?
I also checked it by default in an updated FF, Safari, Chrome, IE7, IE8, Flock and Rockmelt.
But they all seem to work properly in my case.

holy crap  :?
Really, i'm not having this issue in any of my browsers.
Hmm... does anyone uses the Web Developer addon in Firefox?
I would like to know which <div> is wrapping that gap.
...why am i not having this issue. Freak'n annoying as i do want to solve this.
Thanks for making the screen shot Maverik.

Here is an extract of the rendered markup:

Code: [Select]
<div class="empty_list">
Keine gefunden </div>

<style type="text/css">
.empty_list {
display: none;
}
</style>

<br>
</div>
<div class="">
<h2>Seite hinzufügen</h2>

I think that you closed all DIVs before and this DIV inherits the background of the body class, because when loading the page for a short moment the background is white and then it turns blue, once it inherits the background property from the body. Sorry, the "Web Developer addon" won't work on my Linux system ...

cheers

It seems the visuals and general functions of this admin template have been copied from a commercial non-WB template: http://themeforest.net/item/freshcms-an-almost-complete-cms-skin/50089

The license prohibits to use it for resale purposes. In the license "giving away for free" also counts as "resale". While creating a WB template based on this ThemeForest template is allowed for use for your own company or client (based on 1 license per project), giving it to the WB community is not. I have removed the zip file.

Maybe the author can work something out with the author of the ThemeForest template, I don't know...

I don't see any problems as i know Mark, the one who originally made the template, and i bought a template, the source legally and he is aware of the migration of it.
Maybe you could pm me first instead of deleting the file and acusing me from copying or stealing.
To be honest, i really feel insulted by that. I've never copied or stole something in this matter at all.
Besides that, I also designed parts of the theme as well and put extras in it.
I'm confused and disapointed. I do respect the hurr, worries and questions, but an email to me first could have spare all commotions.

The responsibility for proper communications is yours primarily. Besides: as I wrote: it's not a problem to port a commercial template to a WB one for your own use, the problem may be to publish it as freeware to a community. As far as I know, the license you bought prohibits that. Or did you spend 1000 dollars for the extended license, only to give it to the WB community. I don't think so.

Please offer written consent of the original author that he agrees to use his template as a base for a WB template that will be published freely to unlimited users.

For the record, I did not accuse you of stealing. I only wrote that you copied at least significant parts of the template, which is prohibited by its license. Maybe you just didn't realize, maybe you have permission of the author, I don't know. Please inform us about that.

please don't take it personally, we had our experience in the past and just want to avoid any kind of legal trouble.
