Title: New admin template
Post by: Argos on November 26, 2008, 04:22:13 PM
I have created a new WB 2.7 admin template some time ago, which I use for all my sites. I thought I'd share it, maybe other people like it.

There are some aspects that may need further tweaking and polishing, but I'm too busy for doing that now. I'll post updates when I modify things.

I used the slick, neutral icons from "Enhanced Pages Admin". See forum thread https://forum.WebsiteBaker.org/index.php/topic,6274.0.html.

The Media section uses a clever javascript that synchronizes browsing. Check it out. This also was contributed by someone years ago. Please let me know if you can trace the origin of it. I also modified the Media section a bit and ripped the folder creating thingy from it. I don't want my users to create folders of their own, and I wanted to clean the page up. I also include the original Media section in the zip, so see for yourself what to use.

I hope you like it and please suggest any improvements, and report any possible bugs. Just copy the complete admin folder to your server to use it (rename or remove the default one before). That's all.

Hello

for I know, that are a some other good backend templates out there, I decided to make a new category at
AMASP Project (http://www.websitebakers.com/pages/admin/admin-backend/backend-argos.php)

So if you are an author of a backend template and you want to show it there, please contact (http://www.websitebakers.com/pages/contact/registration.php) me.

One of the best, up till now, Jurgen. Thanks for sharing.
I don't know exactly what you mean with the media synchronizing script, but I'll find out later.
Only thing I don't like so much is the width - I'd prefer the stage to fit in a 800px screen. But that may be a matter of taste. And you forgot to change the header of the login section ('Ito Klantenservicecentr um).

I had an icon set which I found fits even better to the style, so I attach this as another option.

@Erpe: good idea!

Thanks Vincent!
- With the synchronizing I mean that the upload browse field synchronizes with the shown folder with files.
- I choose width 900px because 800px monitors are as good as extinct, so there's no need for 800px. But I do like a fixed width for better overview. So I choose 900px. It's a matter of personal taste, that's true.
- I fixed the login section header, modified the Forgotten Details and the Logins Exceeded templates, and fixed a layout bug that caused the content to float right in Chrome and maybe other non-IE browsers.
- I do find your big icons a great improvement, they fit perfectly with the theme, thanks! However, I like my small pages overview icons better. So I stuck to those  :-D
- I shrunk your big icons to 10% filesize (now only a few bytes each).
- I added a Help section to the Start page.

To sum up: all these modifications are now in version 3 of the admin. I removed the attachment from my first post. Please use the latest version at AMASP: http://www.websitebakers.com/pages/admin/admin-backend/backend-1.php

Yo!
This is really one of the best I've seen till now.
Very good work.
But I miss the WB-Logo..

 :-D

Yes, much better as the current one.
Nice light header, nice horizontal-nav.

A "backend-theme" implemantation (for uploadable themes) would be a great addition in a future WB release.

@Argos
Did you try to implement a width-switcher 800px/960px ?

Stefek

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

I left the WB logo out, because I use this template for my clients, and I don't feel the need to communicate with a big logo that it's WB I use. I don't hide it either, so the copyright notice is still there on the bottom. But the logo doesn't add value for my clients, and only takes up space. But feel free to place it back  :-D

Maybe I'll have a crack at a width switcher later (nice idea), but I'm rather busy at the moment, so don't hold your breath waiting for it... Any bugs that may be found I will have a look at asap of course.

I found a bug, Jurgen. Users who are member of a different group than Administrators are not allowed to add pages. Perhaps you changed something in the code?
I'll start looking for it, but if you know the solution, please let us know.

NEW VERSION!

I have improved my backend template:

1. fixed the bug that others than admin couldn't add pages
2. fixed bad CSS that messed op the header section in case of long website -title- tags
3. fixed mouse-over color change in pages overview
4. improved several other minor and cosmetic CSS elements

I hope you like it! I have some more improvements in mind, but it's bugfee now at least (a far as I know). New version (wb27_admin_argos_v4 .zip) can be found at AMASP.

Thanks for your comment. It seems that some descriptions are longer than I knew. I could let the boxes stretch, but then the layout would be not so neat anymore. Your solution of making them a bit taller works fine. Or you could modify the long descriptions so that all fit in the boxes. I think 3 lines should be enough space for a decent description. But maybe I'll make the boxes taller in the template, I'll have a look at it.

Hi,

I tried this admin and I truely love it!

One thing.....where can I create new maps in the media section? This option is gone  :? :?

Greetz,
Boudi

Yes, becasue it is based on a template I use for my clients. I prefer remove clients permissions they don't need, to eliminate the risk of user errors. So I removed the option to create maps of their own. But there is also the default media folder in the zip. So you can restore that one if you like. But then you loose the synchronizing fields option.

I will update the template to combine the synchronizing option with the default media options one of these days... There are some other things I want to modfy as well.

BTW: nice to hear you like the template!

Post by: Boudi on January 27, 2009, 01:44:15 PM
Oopss... just before your post I figured it out and removed the post to avoid unnessecary posts haha  :-D

But indeed...we use it now as testing for some clients and they love it too. Great, plain, simple but has all the action in it. And as we figured out now how to enable the origin Media folder it is perfect.

Thank you for this great template.

PS: I think it looks great on wide screens ;)

Greetz,
Boudi

Great stuff Jurgen, thanks very much - I started using it straight away for all my clients, what a difference it makes, very professional!

I've changed a few things: just made the main tabs in line with the other things rather than being absolute and I've added direct link to my beloved pagecloner mod in the top links.

Thanks!

Nothing fancy - I just noticed that the tabs where quite far to the left on my 1280 screen resolution so I made them float the left in line with the content of the page, see screenshot attached.

All it took is this line in the stylesheet:

Code: [Select]
.menu {position:relative;float:left;margin:39px 0 0 0;padding:0;text-align:center;width:900px;}
Something else - how do we revert back to the standard media setup?

Thanks again,

Konrad

And - how can I create new folders in media?

Hello,

just wanna inform you guys, that we are working hard to make the admin template skinable, wich basically means exporting all images, icons, css and html to a separate folder. While working on this we also try to make the default theme valide and working on all browsers. And maybe we also can manage to integrate a second theme (maybe argos one) to the wb core.

So if someone is interested in helping make this working please PM me.

Matthias

Hi guys,

I will update the template with Konrads style adjustment, and restore the full media section (it is still availabe in the zip file though, as can be read in the instructions), and tweak some more. I'll have a look at IE6 as well.

So wait a little, and within a day or 2 I will posted an updated template.

I will glad to assist with the WB2.8 skinnable stuff! I have sent you a PM, Matthias.

Title: Re: New admin template (Updated to V5)
Post by: Argos on February 24, 2009, 12:05:21 PM
I have updated the admin template with Konrad's adjustment, and a number of other style issues. I also restored the full Media folder. If you want to hide the subfolder creating option in the Media folder for your clients (like me), you only have to change a class name in the template.html file of the Media folder. I have commented the place to do that, on the bottom of the file. I also have changed the layout of the template file a bit, to make the order of the fields more logical.

I checked the admin template in IE6, but found no errors. I also don't understand what Chio means with "missing text in riders". Maybe he can comment on that? Or maybe those problems are solved with this version?

This is the last regular version for WB2.7 (unless major faults are discovered), and I will concentrate on the skinnable admin backend for WB2.8 now.

That is correct. I move the content to the left, because I thought on very wide screens it was not preferred to have it in the middle. That was one of the 'complaints' before...

I see with your configuration the menu is a bit too low, and the content a bit too far to the left, but you use a non-standard configuration like ubuntu/firefox. I cannot support or even check all kind of "exotic" combinations. Check for Windows and standard browers only...

Hi Maverik,

I'm on FF 3.0.6 too on XP and works fine for me - see screenshot. DO you use Ubuntu as your operating system and use FF iin combination with that? Perhaps that could be the reason?

Please feel free to make your own adjustments to the stylesheet if you wish and let us know how you get on.

I did some stylesheet and other tweaks to the admin template:
- went back to centered layout, 900px width
- fixed some css
- changed some layout details
- added template version number to the header
- changed version numbering to decimal: this is version RC 0.7, while the previous one was version 6.

Tested in WinXP on IE6, IE7, Mozilla/Firefox, and Google Chrome.

Please use version 0.8 from AMASP. It has more room for descriptions. Actually version 0.7 already had. What version do you use? You can also edit the file yourself ofcourse, or shorten the tools descriptions. Some tools have way too long descriptions anyway.

Would save allot of space for people who has allot of admin modules installed.

- set fixed height of Admin Tools list, with overflow:auto for longer descriptions
- added section ID and section type above each section (thanks for the idea stefek!)
- changed width to 100% of Addons descriptions and Access descriptions
- changed width to 100% of Pages Overview
- changed ID and Menu Title columns in Page Overview around

My admin is built for a default installation. Non-default modules may cause visual hick-ups, mostly because they have their own layout settings. I cannot/will not edit other modules to match the admin template. The same goes for incorporating modules into the template. I have added a few things I thought were handy for most users, but that's it I'm afraid. Also: I want to keep work on thsi template as minimal as possible, because I will focus on the new wb2.8 skinnable backend when I find the time. This Wb2.7 template will stay as it is, apart from minor corrections if needed.

Hallo an alle,

Sorry, I don't think both suggestions will be of much use for the average administrator, so I won't try to add this as a feature to the admin template. If someone else wants to add it, and share the result I am willing to add it to the download file. But it should be completely within the admin folder, and should not need any modifications to files outside the admin folder.

Hello Argos,

will your backend design be part of WebsiteBaker 2.8? Seems it is not yet integrated into the latest version on the SVN project side.

Really would love to see your backend design as pre-installed layout for WB 2.8. It is by far the best backend design for WB I have seen so far and also my clients prefer this one about all other designs  :-)

Cheers Clara

Thanks Clara, I appreciate that! I'm not really part of the development team or something, so I don't know. When I will find the time I will create a skinnable version for 2.8, but I'm not sure if that will make it into the first version of WB2.8.

The same here.

Really interested in this skinable stuff and I will provide at least one Admin Backend Skin - but I do not have the time now and furthermore: I don't know what is going on in the Dev Team right now.

Well, I have some good news. Not about the skinnable version, but I do have a major update for my admin template in the making. One of these days I will publish the new version with a revamped Media section. New features:
- a new, more compact layout, that I think is more user friendly.
- the browser function is enhanced with mini thumbnails, file info, and mouse-overs with 200px width previews.
- option to automatically resize (resample) uploads. You can set the proportions in the backend. Ideal for clients without grpahics skills!

It's a cooperation with Ruud. The coding has been done by him (thanks Ruud!), and I did some minor tweaks and the new layout. Still some testing to do, and maybe some tweaks, but release will be within a week I think.

See the image attached, of the test instalation. It's Dutch, but of course the release will be default English.

One thing I really would wish (if I dared..)

A simple php-file in any subdirectory  media directory, with a content like:
$maxwidth=50;
$maxheight = 200;
...

This file could - if exist - be included and override the other settings.
So it would be possible to resize per directory.

An example:
I have a folder /media/pics280x240/
In this folder is a file "settings.php" with content:
$maxwidth=280;
$maxheight = 240;

So if I upload a picture into this folder, it is  resized to max 280px width (or 240 height), no matter what other setting say.
If this file doesnt exist, the common settings are used.

An example:

In this folder is a file "settings.php" with content:
$maxwidth=280;
$maxheight = 240;

I can understand why you would want this.

It might be difficult for the "typical" webdesigner/user to get a valid settings.php in a media folder.
Upload will not allow php to be uploaded. Also the file should be a valid php file, or any upload will crash.

Now, the page will store the last used resize settings in a cookie. I could give it a try to make that work for each folder with separate cookies. That way the browser should remember what settings are used for each folder.

Would that help?

Dear Ruud,
if I understand Chio right, he wants to take the options by himself for the customer - as a preparation.
Cookies will help for those making all the work themselfes. But if I make the adjustements cookiebased, my customer won't have any advantage, unless I do it on his PC, I assume.

So, if I get Chio right, for him it will be enough while haveing the chance to upload those (changed) files via ftp or webbasededit-admintool?

Kind Regards,
Stefek

BTW: The Screenshot looks very promising. I am really curious.

Title: Re: New admin template
Post by: doc on May 27, 2009, 11:45:56 PM
Hi,

to avoid Cookies, put an optional settings.txt file to store the image information e.g. xxx|yyy. Then you can fetch the infos via PHP file_get_contents to read in the settings and e.g. regular expression to check if the setting is valid or not.

One remark: this is about an admin template, so all these technical extras and modifications must be part of the /admin/ folder somehow somewhere, must serve a general purpose, must not include changes in files outside the /admin/ folder, and should be possible to ignore or not use by people that don't want to use them. Otherwise it should be a module, snippet or droplet, outside of the admin template. Or part of the new WB version core.
Title: Re: New admin template

if I understand Chio right, he wants to take the options by himself for the customer - as a preparation.
This is something I would like for WB as a whole, and has more to do with extended and specific rights management of technical settings, than with this admin template. I wish for many modules to be able to set fixed settings as an admin, and give my clients foolproof administration rights for what's necessary and nothing more.

So Argos please do what you can and send me as soon as possible a first version. Even if it is not 100% ready, we could use the RC testing phase to complete (bugfix  :-D) it.

I'm working on it Matthias! I'm pretty far, and so far I managed to do only some small changes in /pages/index.php and keeping the rest in the template files. But I have to do the Media section still, so there will be some major changes in core functions I guess. I plan to finish tonight, even it means working till deep in the night. So it will be as ready as possible tomorrow morning. I'll keep you posted, Matthias.

It's nice to see this admin template is appreciated  :-D

I have played a little bit because I wanted to have those new previews in the FCK-Editor also.

For those who are interested:
In
/modules/fckeditor/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/browser/default/frmresourceslist.html
replace all td width="16" with td width="50"
replace this line:
Code: [Select]
'<img alt="" src="images/icons/' + sIcon + '.gif" width="16" height="16" border="0"><\/a>' +with:
Code: [Select]
'<img alt="" src="../../../../../../../admin/media/thumb.php?t=1&img='+fileUrl+'" width="50" border="0"><\/a>' +

In
admin/media/thumb.php
replace
Code: [Select]
$image = addslashes($_GET['img']);with
Code: [Select]
$delpath = WB_URL.MEDIA_DIRECTORY;
$image = str_replace($delpath, '', ($_GET['img']));
$image = addslashes($image);

Seems to work.

Problems:
The admin-Directory is hardcoded in frmresourceslist.ht ml
Non-Image Files have no icon. Seems the nopreview.jpg is missing. If I create one, the problem is solved.

I have no practice with this Javascript-stuff, maybe someone could help me?

Great upgrade from the previous version! Implemented by several clients. Thnq for your time to create this.

One thing: why is the multiple upload function in the media set back from 10 to 5 uploads at once? I already had a few questions about customers who really miss the 10 uploads at once. Personally for me this is a step back too.

Just a matter of keeping the layout compact. But there is room for 3 more, so I will update the files at AMASP. The WB2.8 version has 8 fields as well.

You can add them manually to the admin/media/template/html file. You can see the fields 1-5. Just add 3 (or more) after that:

Code: [Select]

<tr>
  <td width="50%" align="left"><input type="file" size="49" name="file6" /> </td>
</tr>
<tr>
  <td width="50%" align="left"><input type="file" size="49" name="file7" /> </td>
</tr>
<tr>
  <td width="50%" align="left"><input type="file" size="49" name="file8" /> </td>
</tr>

Yes, uploader is already in the core files and can be used from all backend themes. It is used from wb_theme per default but can easily integrated in other themes too by simply adding a few lines to the media templates.

On this example the flexibility of the new skinable admin interfaces can be shown in a perfect way. All needed code is admin dir. Wether a backend theme makes use of the different features (e.g. zip-upload, image-resizing ...) or not decides the theme creator by simply add or remove a few lines in his template files without the need of making changes on any core files.

unfortunately you made use of an old wb_theme version as basis for your argos_theme integration. To add this feature you look at media.htt from wb_theme. Basically you only need to add the following lines:

Code: [Select]
<td valign="top">
        <input type="checkbox" name="unzip" id="unzip"  onclick="toggle();" />
        <label for="unzip">{TEXT_UNZIP_FILE}</label>
        <span id="delzip" style="display: none;"><br /><input type="checkbox" name="delzip" id="deletezip" />
        <label for="deletezip">{TEXT_DELETE_ZIP}</label></span>
</td>

Hi Argos, Ruud,

Your Admin-Template is a great enhancement, very nice and useful. I´ve found a little bug media-section: the resize-function does not work on folders width empty-spaces in foldernames.

For the future i have some wishes for the media-section:
-have a global resize-function, so that the admin can set a maximun-size for all folders and images
-replace the old upload-function with something like fancy-uploader. I tried to build it in, but on first attempts I failed to bring it together width the must-have resize-function.

All in all a great and very useful template!

It is fixed in SVN changeset 1102 (http://project.websitebaker2.org/browser/trunk?rev=1102).

It was not the Argos Theme, it was a small bug in the admin code below that.

Just wanted to inform that the Argos admin theme is one of the 3 default themes available in the newly published WB2.8 Final, released today. The theme is (of course) not only adapted to the skinable backend system of WB2.8, it has been developed further and improved as well. It has an even better advanced Media section than the 2.7 version (while the other admin themes still even have the simple old one), it offers more information than the other themes, and it has brand new icons and images as well. It's also the only much wider than the others. I am very happy with it and proud that it's part of the default package now :-D

So upgrade your sites to WB2.8 now!

In further version could you just update login_forgot.htt file, and replace

Code: [Select]
<title>Retrieve Login Details</title>

with

Code: [Select]
<title>{SECTION_FORGOT}</title>

:)

cheers

Thanx for a great template. This is a great design, and I feel you managed til combine the admin interface to be both user friendly and visual appealing.

I've translated the languagefile til norwegian for those who need it.

regards
Geir

running WB 2.8 latest version Using Argos theme.

When logged into the admin on the pages tab, If i hover over a page listed the background changes to a color of f1f8fd. I want to darken this as when i am deleting pages, i am finding myself tossing the wrong page more often than not.

What css file, and what line do i need to change? I can figure the optimal color for my eyes then.

Did you know about the page-trash option in WB:
http://www.websitebaker2.org/en/help/user-guide/working-with-wb/settings/general-settings.php

It allows you to restore pages you have deleted by accident.
