Hello and welcome
1. if I choose a template will that show up as default once I set it up in the admin/settings/index.php
(as its not doing it now.
in the normal case it should work this way.
Did you upload your own template or did you use one of the delivered ones?

2. can I alter the css file, and where.
Of course you can change anything and any part of your template, including the css.

The best way to do so is having a test environment (i.e. XAMPP).
You should also have a look at WebsiteBaker portable (just google).

You will find your templates in root/templates/template_name

Read the manual, this is a good ressource to start with.

Regards,
Stefek

Ty for the replies,
looks like I have a glitch, the installed templates are not working when I switch them on, any of them. :(
