Title: First post approved by MOD in forum
Post by: crnogorac081 on September 19, 2009, 06:14:49 PM
Hi,

I noticed lately that there were more and more spam messages on forum. People register account and their first post is spam.. Is there a way we could prevent this in future, by letting moderators approve first post (or first some) for new users.. Is something like this available (or easy to implement) in SMF ?

cheers

I think we could enable the approval of registrations, but wouldn't that put people off? Anyway, could you recommend a mod for SMF which does that and would you be willing to take part of that work onto your shoulders?

cheers

Hello!

I don't really know because I don't use SMF personally, but look here: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=search;type=13

Perhaps http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=999 might fit.

Yours Michael

Edit: I think having to register before being able to write is no real harm to people, because most people register.
But - also spam bots register.

The issue here is that we have a limited resources available and if we implement those kinds of functions, me might:

a) put people off because registration is not easy.
b) require more resources for forum maintenance.

Additionally when installing such a mod it can always come to incompatibilities with the existing installation which then means disruption of service.

So that is why I looked at the existing resources in our installation first and that was "approval of registration" which means, that a user can not directly post but needs to wait for someone to approve his registration first.

The main question still is: Is anybody else willing to help maintaining the forum?

@Waldschwein: Thanks for taking the time to actually look into the options available!

cheers

Klaus

Hello!

I think using a "whitelist" (I mean, nobody can post until the moderator approve new registrations) isn't that good, because people have to wait and it is much more work for moderators than deleting some spam posts... Of course there are some safety mods for SMF out there - and SMF 2 will soon be released I think (it is yet an RC, and if you wish to stay with the none OpenSource SMF board). Every such software has problems with spam - we know it from WB 2.6x, with the more individual spam protection introduced in 2.7 nearly all spam problems were solved.

If there is need to delete spam posts and / or spam bot registrations, I could help out (second time, I know...) too.

Yours Michael
