Title: Commercial Template
Post by: N1kko on July 15, 2012, 10:29:37 PM
Hi guys,

I have designed a template for WB and wanted to make it a paid commercial template, just wanted to ask how I go about this before I post?

Thanks
Nick

WebsiteBaker does not offer a store to sell your templates.
So you could sell your template through one of the standard "template shops" like ThemeForest
You can "advertise" in the Commercial WB related offers (https://forum.WebsiteBaker.org/index.php/board,64.0.html) forum area.

Thanks Ruud,

Just need to check what I need to keep intact in the info.php file regarding the License?

This is a tricky one (I see a discussion coming up here).

Other "big players" in the CMS world are discussing about this for years and years.
A real answer is very hard to find.

The answer I like the most is:

The .php files in a template that are using CMS functions should be licensed GPL, since they are derivative works of the GPL licensed CMS.
The css and artwork can have a different license.

GNU/GPL itself talks about templates being a special case. See: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WMS

So... Some kind of dual license statement would be the answer..

Ps. this is my personal view. Do not see this as an official statement of WebsiteBaker Org. e.V.

N1kko,

you probably could hook up with others who already have a template shop, as www.combosa.com

There are more designers who offer commercial (for sell) templates for WB.

Just get in touch with them directly. That is be what I would suggest.

Kind regards,
Stefek

Thanks for the help, think I will go down the route of dual license and keep the GNU all intact, would be great if WB arranged something for selling commercial templates and modules sort of like Opencart does http://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=extension/extension (http://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=extension/extension)

There is really no point in this right now, in my opinion. There are simply no commercial WB templates of real quality around. There is no need for a selling platform without merchandise...  :|

Every now and then someone comes along with big plans about creating and sellling commercial templates, but somehow it never actually happens.

So if you have big plans, please create some professional templates and offer them in the commercial forum to begin with. If more templates follow I'm sure some selling platform will follow. Or even better: we should have a WB section on ThemeForest.

Sometimes I think about creating high quality ready to go WB templates too, but I never seem to have the time for it
