800x600 was perhaps a "gold standard" back in 2001 and the days of 15 inch monitors, but for the past few years, new computers come with at least 17 inch monitors which default to 1024x768. On the last machine I set up for a customer with a LCD panel, the display defaulted to 1280x1024!

Wish that were so but according to the latest Jupiter research paper I read there's still about a 40% market share for 800 x 600 monitors. For a high end or urban commercial site, I might agree with forgetting about the older monitors but for a non-profit, it's important to cater to the widest possible viewership. That's especially true for an older audience, who often are reluctant to upgrade. Remote Alaska is not where I think of when I think of high tech people, at least it wasn't when I lived there.

Another consideration in a remote area like Prince William Sound is lack of high speed access. I just did a site for an Alaska artist who has to update it by modem over a radio phone! http://welti-rice.com
