Read 235 times and no replies? Well, even though this thread is ancient I'll have a little go!
Easy to install and use: Cubecart, Lots of features but heavy: Magento, Nice balance: Jshop.
And of course there's Bakery! If I were to set up a small ecomm website though I'd probably just use WB in combination with Mal's ecomm so I can optimize it well for the se's - I don't like the way most ecomm websites work in this respect and depending on the size and nature of the shop might be willing to comprmise functionality for ranking!

We have just moved away from OsCommerce in favour of Magento. It took me a cuople of days to get my head around the admin system, but it's well documented, and it is really good. It is a really powerful and robust system. The only thing that i really don't like is the complexity of the template system. Quite hard to get a custom design installed.
I have been told that X-cart is very good as well, and quite cheap to get it set up by the guys at X-cart, but I have never used it myself.

Thanks for these. I have a QNAP local LAMP server, and tried but failed installing Magento, as some PHP features were not enabled. As I am out of my depth, I just switched to try CubeCart, which installed without a hitch.
Thanks again...

Had a brief look at X-Cart. It seems to be very professional but staring price at USD 229 plus extra costs for "must have" modules, is a bit pricey for me. Granted, if you are using it to generate thousands, it may not be expensive, but for the hobby-ist, it ain't cheap!
JSHOP is even dearer: £200 GBP
Cubecart 3 is free, and v4 has a 30 day free eval period, then starts at USD 130 (logod) or USD 180 (logo free)
for now I am going to see if CubeCart can do what I need... :)
